Named for Robert Redford’s character in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Sundance Film Festival has been a recurring event at the Utah ski resort of Park City since 1991 – but the story goes back even further. The Sundance Film Festival is the direct descendant of the US Film Festival, which began in Salt Lake City back in 1978, moving to Park City in 1981. Through his Sundance Institute and Wildwood Enterprises production company, Mr. Redford has been an integral part of the festival from the beginning. The festival was conceived to encourage and promote up-and-coming independent film makers and to showcase new American films. Indeed, the festivals have introduced the likes of Jim Jarmusch, Darren Aronofsky, Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith to the film-going public.

Today, the Sundance Film Festival is a chance for the freshest talent to hobnob with established industry veterans in the snowy and sylvan environment of Utah in January. For those seeking refuge from the cold, perhaps one of the warmest places to visit is the DIRECTV Lodge presented by AT&T. This friendly festival hotspot is home to the Variety Studio, featuring on-the-spot interviews and behind-the-scene portraits of filmmakers and artists, rising and established talent, and elite festival attendees. In addition, the DIRECTV Lodge is a culinary destination offering mouth-watering American cuisine from the famed Los Angeles eatery Craig’s – also known for their celebrity sightings.

Hosting the DIRECTV Lodge was talented TV personality Carrie Keagan, seen making the rounds with the Samson Go Mic Mobile – the world’s first wireless microphone system for smartphones. From the DIRECTV Lodge, Ms. Keagan was able to chat quickly and candidly with artists and talent as they came and left. The wireless format of the Go Mic Mobile and the ease of operation allowed Ms. Keagan the spontaneity to move about and freely interact with her pantheon of guests; everyone from Jane Fonda, Debra Messing and Keira Knightley to Peter Dinklage, John Cho and Usher. The single handheld mic eliminated the buzz-kill of equipping the guest with a second microphone, checking levels, etc. In fact, there was no production crew required whatsoever. But most importantly, the Go Mic Mobile was connected directly to Ms. Keagan’s smartphone, allowing her to stream these mini interviews live, and to upload them instantly to all forms of DIRECTV social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

For 2018, AT&T is once again the official Multichannel Video Programming Distributor sponsor at the Sundance Film Festival. In addition, DIRECTV has been co-financing films selected for the Video On Demand and Pay Per View platforms at Sundance since 2012. Samson worked with AT&T in advance of the festival, and was able to create a custom-color microphone for the Go Mic Mobile used by Carrie Keagan at the DIRECTV Lodge. This color was created to match the official color of the latest AT&T globe logo, redesigned for 2016.
